First Steps

• Contact your local library.
• Do you want books on a particular subject available? Discuss this with your library contact. Allow 2-3 weeks for delivery.
• Invite adult chaperones. The library recommends 1 adult chaperone per 10 students.

Prepare Your Students

• Talk with the students about expected behavior.
• Explain how the library can be used, and the difference between a public and school library if necessary.
• Discuss what a library card is, what it allows you to do, and the responsibilities associated with it.
• Remind students to bring their active library cards if you want them to check out books or use computers for research.

At the Library

• Encourage students to read something new. Here are some suggestions from KidLinks Books & Reading.
• Encourage students to go to the Information Desk and ask for help during the visit.

• Show students the library's KidLinks website.
• Demonstrate how to use the library catalog.
• Explain the differences between Databases vs. Websites.
• Review How to Evaluate a Website.
