Nourishing minds, transforming lives and other 2009 milestones
Recently, a librarian shared this good news: "As in many libraries, we help people in their job searching. A gentleman comes in on a regular basis and works very hard looking for a job. He is always very pleasant and updates us on his interviews and callbacks. This week he came in to let us know that he got a job!" I'm sharing this with you because it embodies Hennepin County Library's new mission statement: "to nourish minds, transform lives and build community together." * Teaching moments at every turn. Scrabble, storytimes, origami and intergenerational activities are some of the opportunities librarians use to reinforce early literacy, reading skills and library resources to all age groups. View photos (PDF)
* Libraries receiving extreme makeovers. Nokomis and Northeast libraries closed for renovation in late 2009 and Plymouth and Maple Grove libraries will re-open in spring and summer 2010. See details on building projects in process.
* Friends of the Library continue their strong support. In addition to the existing Friends groups at suburban libraries, Friends groups at East Lake, Linden Hill, Sumner, Washburn and Webber Park libraries are being formed. If you're interested, call 952-847-8545.

New and improved services in 2010:

* Fast track to bestsellers. Bestseller Express, the low-cost bestseller rental program will be available from all Hennepin County libraries in early 2010.
* Self-booking public meeting spaces. You can check for availability and request meeting spaces at any Hennepin County library online in early 2010. Watch for details!
* Bring your library cards. Beginning Jan. 2, 2010, you will need your library card or know your barcode and PIN to sign up for and use a computer at the library or other electronic resources.

* Winter Jackets. Curl up by a fire and check out some new (book) jackets! Read or listen to a book. Attend an author talk or book discussion. Share what you're reading with others and qualify for prize drawings.
* Learn Office applications. Learn about OpenOffice, the free multiplatform office suite that can be used to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations and other office applications.
* Resources for tax time include online resources and trained volunteer counselors at Brookdale, Brooklyn Park and Southdale libraries to help qualified individuals and families complete income tax forms.
* Plan for college. Counselors will present tips from selecting the college to applying for financial aid to structuring your essay.
