The Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC) is a high-density storage facility for Minnesota libraries that stores and makes available important but little-used books. The facility is staffed and operated by the Minitex service at the University of Minnesota. Approximately 175,000 items from the Minneapolis Central Library’s collections are housed at MLAC. minnesota library access center
MLAC is located in the Andersen Library on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota campus. Unlike a library which shelves items either by subject or alphabetically by title, MLAC shelves items by size. The goal is to shelve at the highest density possible to maximize space usage.
The collection is closed to the public, but Hennepin County Library’s materials at MLAC are listed in the Library Catalog and may be requested for borrowing. Because of the specialized nature of this storage facility and staffing limitations, item requests may take several weeks to fill.
