Attendees: Library Board members President Patricia Izek, Vice President Therese VanBlarcom; staff Library Director Lois Langer Thompson, Nancy Palmer, Ardis Wiley, Lois Lenroot-Ernt and Char Sohlberg

President Patricia Izek welcomed attendees and delayed the meeting start time until 4:50. Since a quorum of committee members was not in attendance, no official business was conducted.

2010-2014 Capital Plan Discussion

Director Lois Langer Thompson provided an overview of the Capital Budget process for all departments and the roles and responsibilities of those involved, including the Capital Budget Task Force (CBTF). The Library Board participates in the development of the library capital plan and priority list. The 2009 Capital Budget recommendations from County Administrator Richard Johnson are being reviewed by the County Board of Commissioners. Ms. Thompson summarized existing plans (Framework for the Future and Outlook 2010) and reviewed the eight principles that are still relevant. She reviewed our current environment which has had and will have an impact on the capital budget (merger, funding streams, County Administrator's objectives, and the need for an annual update). Discussion followed. Ms. Thompson announced the Library Board Budget & Finance Committee is scheduled to meet June 11, 2009, noon to 2 p.m. at Central Library, Doty Board Room to recommend Capital Budget priorities for 2014 which will be presented to the full Library Board, June 24, 2009.

Possible topics for the Library Board agenda on May 27, 2009 were discussed.

Library Board and Friends Groups Community Conversations

Four library board members volunteered to cover the seven meetings being held in all Commissioners' districts in June. Meeting dates and times have been posted on the HCL public website.

2009 ALA Summer Conference

Two Library Board members expressed interest in attending the conference. All Board members will be queried about conference/travel plans for the remainder of 2009; responses will be compiled and reviewed by President Izek before June 1.
