PREVENT "READING RECESSION" AND MAKE YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY A FAMILY DESTINATION THIS SUMMER!
Hundreds of Free Programs for Kids and Teens Begin in June
Make your local Hennepin County Library a family destination this summer! Summer is a great time for kids and teens to create and explore at the library -- and avoid "reading recession" by keeping up reading skills gained during the school year.

Hundreds of free summer programs begin in June!  Themes are "Be Creative @ Your Library" (kids) and "Express Yourself @ Your Library" (teens). There will be dozens of book clubs for guys, girls, and teens; programs by Three Rivers Parks, the Science Museum of Minnesota, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and children's authors; technology for kids and teens; storytimes -- some starring real construction trucks; amazing acrobats; mind-boggling magic; energizing music; and more.

How can teens express themselves at the library this summer? Through creative writing, breakdance, hip hop, DDR, drawing, crafts, henna, teen clubs, "Twilight" activities, and "Best Book Ever" book reviews. Dare we say more?!

That's right -- there's more! For a chance to win a free paperback book, kids can enter weekly Read to Win drawings by using words or pictures to tell library staff about a book they’ve read. Complete and return an entry form (available at the library or online at www.kidlinks.org) from June 15-Aug. 15.  Kids can keep track of all the great books they read on a "reading record" available at the library. Need suggestions? Ask your local librarian or go online to www.kidlinks.org and http://www.hclib.org/teens/

What's the scoop on online activities? Teens can rave or rant about their pick for "Best Book Ever."  Guys and gals will be (virtually) lining up for online book clubs -- and expressing their opinions about some of the best books for young people! Like a challenge? Kids can enter the weekly Book Blast quiz for a chance to win a prize. Find more "buzz" about library happenings, including tips on cool reads for hot summer days, by signing up to receive the online KidLinks News.

Start planning your summer now at your local library!  For the program calendar, library locations and hours, KidsLinks and TeenLinks, and more, go to www.hclib.org   Printed program guides will be available at local libraries in late May.
