'MECHANICAL GUY IN A DIGITAL WORLD' CREATES KINETIC SCULPTURE FOR GOLDEN VALLEY LIBRARY

Sculptor Jeffrey Zachmann describes himself as "a mechanical guy in a digital world." Since childhood, the Fergus Falls artist has had a fascination with mechanical devices and mechanical movements of almost any kind. Several years ago he discovered his true calling: transforming a fascination with mechanical movement into fabulous moving sculptures.

A sculpture by Zachmann has recently been purchased by the Friends of the Golden Valley Library and is on exhibit at the library, 830 Winnetka Ave. N. The public is invited to a reception celebrating the official installation of the new sculpture at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Stenglein, 2nd District; Mayor Linda Loomis; library staff; and Friends of the Library will speak briefly.

Zachmann's sculptures are a blend of art and science, and captivate people of all ages. "I see my work not only as sculptural machines, but also as studies in line, shape, color, and motion," Zachmann says on his website, http://www.zachmann.com

"The sculpture has already generated a lot of interest, especially among children," said Senior Librarian Mary Anderson. "Mr. Zachmann's sculptures are fascinating to both children and adults and often spur discussion on physics and art. This type of art supports the library's goal to encourage exploration and understanding of the arts and sciences."

Anderson said the impetus for the acquisition was a visit to the Duluth Public Library by Golden Valley Friends' President David Hill and his family, where they saw one of Zachmann's sculptures. They thought a Zachmann sculpture would be a great addition to the Golden Valley Library, too.

Titled simply "Kinetic Sculpture 462," the Golden Valley Library's sculpture is 7 feet X 24 inches X 16 inches and is composed of stainless steel moving objects and glass balls. The sculpture is encased in glass and located near the library's entrance.

Zachmann's award-winning work is on exhibit at buildings across the country, including a public library in Castle Rock, Colo. and children's hospitals in Minneapolis and Philadelphia.

The reception is sponsored by the Friends of the Golden Valley Library. Refreshments will be served. More info: 952-847-5475 or www.hclib.org
