TEENS CAN LEARN MUSIC AND MULTIMEDIA PRODUCTION AT HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY’S NEW ‘MVSTUDIO’ PROGRAMS
Teens can meet nationally-recognized hip hop artists such as Brother Ali at an “MVStudio” kickoff event and get hands-on experience using the latest technology in music and multimedia production at free programs presented mid-March through mid-May at six Hennepin County libraries.

The programs are presented in partnership with the Institute of Production and Recording (IPR) and are funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, with additional funding from Best Buy’s Children’s Foundation.

“’MVStudio’ programs offer teens an opportunity to use and further develop their creative skills as they learn about music and multimedia production,” said Hennepin County Library Director Lois Langer Thompson. “This program experience offers a way to capture their stories, poems, and ‘voices’ as they collaborate with others and connect with their community.”

SPECIAL KICK-OFF EVENT ON MARCH 8
A special night of freestyle musical performance and interactive demonstration of the latest music and multimedia production software and techniques will kick off “MVStudio” on Tuesday, March 8, 5-7 p.m. at Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis.  Teens in grade seven and up will have an opportunity to meet Rhymesayers Entertainment hip hop artists such as Brother Ali and Plain Ole Bill and see some of the latest technology and tools used in the music production industry.

"We are excited to be involved in this program with the Hennepin County Library and IPR,” said Kevin Beacham of Rhymesayers.  “At Rhymesayers, we recognize the challenges that come with having talent and/or interest in making music, but lacking the means to find an outlet for those creative ideas. We want to make sure that young, musically inspired Twin Cities youth are aware of this new MVStudio launch so they can take advantage of a great opportunity to learn and grow musically as well network within the community."

TEEN TECH SQUAD
Hennepin County Library’s Teen Tech Squad, trained by IPR, will teach the six “MVStudio” workshops.  Teen Tech Squad is a youth employment and youth leadership program designed to empower teens and foster creative expression, confidence and community connection at Hennepin County Library.  The teens involved lead workshops for youth at libraries throughout Hennepin County.

“The Teen Tech Squad is a diverse group of high school students from different parts of the city.  We have seen all of them grow in their abilities and now they all have experience public speaking, facilitating / teaching and planning workshops,” said Teen Central librarian Aaron Lundholm.  “They’ve also developed skills around computer programming, logic, collaborative problem solving and technology troubleshooting.  All of these skills should serve them well as we move into this new territory of music production.”
