HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY – PENN LAKE IN BLOOMINGTON WILL CLOSE FOR RENOVATION ON AUG. 11, REOPEN IN MID-SEPTEMBER

Hennepin County Library – Penn Lake, 8800 Penn Ave. S., Bloomington, will close for renovation at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. The library will re-open in mid-September 2012.

While the library is closed, patrons may choose to visit these nearby libraries:Hennepin County Library – Oxboro, 8801 Portland Ave. S., Bloomington;  Hennepin County Library – Augsburg Park, 7100 Nicollet Ave. S., Richfield;  and Hennepin County Library – Southdale, 7001 York Ave. S., Edina.

On Friday, July 27, requests with a pickup location of Penn Lake will automatically switch to the Southdale Library. Any requests that are not filled during the closing will automatically be converted back to Penn Lake when the library re-opens.

The primary purpose of the renovation is to install a new HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system.  The current heating units and air conditioner were installed when the library opened in 1970 and need to be replaced. While the library is closed, the service and information desks also will be consolidated into one desk, paint will be touched up and new carpeting will be installed in some areas. In addition, the adult reading area will be moved and seating will be added, some furniture will be refinished, and some shelving will be moved.

“Patrons will experience a more streamlined entrance, one service point, and additional ‘comfy’ seating — overall, a fresh new look,” said Ali Turner, manager of Communication and Community Engagement.

Architect is Hagen, Christensen & McIlwain Architects (HCM).

In 2003, the 12,664 square-foot library received some updates and improvements, including a new boiler and new roof, new exterior lighting, and a new fire alarm and security system.  The library was also reconfigured to provide new children’s and teen areas, a new conference room and new quiet study rooms, an adult reading lounge, and changes to the staff work room. Architect for that project also was HCM.
