Textile Center Will Teach New ‘Crafty Minnesota’ Workshops at Hennepin County Libraries Beginning March 4
Adults can learn “Wild and Wooly Felting,” “Retro Macramé,” and “Omiyage Envelopes” at nine new “Crafty Minnesota” workshops to be presented free by Hennepin County Library and the Textile Center March 4-May 16 at three Hennepin County libraries. Advance registration is required and is limited.

The Textile Center is a national center for fiber art that honors textile traditions and promotes excellence and innovation in all forms of textile media, including weaving, quilting, knitting, sewing, needlework, lace making, basketry and beading.

The free Library workshops offer adults an opportunity to learn from Textile Center instructors, who are working artists as well as skilled teachers.

The programs are funded by Minnesota’s Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Library patron Susan Burkhalter has driven all the way from Mound to St. Louis Park to attend several “Crafty Minnesota” workshops at Hennepin County Library – St. Louis Park.

“In December, I made the cutest felted owl ornament,” Burkhalter said. At another workshop she learned a Japanese craft technique, and at yet another learned how to repurpose a t-shirt. “I would absolutely recommend these programs because they are inspirational, enjoyable, no stress and certainly affordable [they are free]. I have nothing but compliments!”

Marty Elstrom, a retired librarian, also has participated in several “Crafty Minnesota” workshops. She has made bracelets, decorated a glass bowl with decoupage, and batik-dyed a scarf.

“The workshops give you a lot of good ideas, and the people there share ideas, too,” said Elstrom, who also enjoys the social aspect of library workshops. “I like doing crafts with a group.”

Heidi Hogg has participated in several “Crafty Minnesota” workshops at the St. Louis Park Library and says they teach skills that are being lost. “Honestly, I think this is such an amazing program for a number of reasons. I’m 31, and I think others near my age didn’t grow up doing much crafting. Instead, disposable products became fashionable right around the time we should have been learning the basics. My grandparents’ generation is dwindling, and I’m worried that a wealth of skills and knowledge will be lost with their passing. I know that last statement sounds a little hyperbolic, but after reading the recent Star Tribune article, ‘Stitching a Route to Bring Jobs Home,’ I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.”

The St. Louis Park resident made a “felt zombie gingerbread man Christmas tree decoration” at the December workshop. “The ‘Crafty Minnesota’ workshops have definitely inspired me to do more crafts. I loved making my zombie gingerbread man, so I’ve started to create some other supernatural gingerbread friends for my zombie, such as a werewolf gingerbread man, a vampire gingerbread man, and a mummy gingerbread man.” She adds that since going to the “Crafty Minnesota” workshops, she has started cross stitching, knitting, embroidery and sewing.

Following are the spring “Crafty Minnesota” workshops. For Hennepin County Library’s complete events and classes schedule:  www.hclib.org. Events are listed on the website up to 12 weeks in advance.
