New Walker Library Opening Saturday, April 26

The new Hennepin County Library – Walker at 2880 Hennepin Avenue in Uptown Minneapolis will open with a celebration Saturday, April 26, at 9 a.m. Event details will be shared in the coming weeks.
The $12 million library on the northwest corner of Hennepin and Lagoon avenues will have a strong street-level presence; flexible spaces for reading, studying and gathering; increased access to technology; improved pedestrian and bicycle access; and parking. It will use daylight harvesting and recycled, local, and renewable materials.
A community advisory committee composed of area residents and other stakeholders developed a community-based vision for the library. They brought local perspectives and a diversity of ideas to the library’s planning and design process.
Construction began in fall 2012, and the library was built and enclosed in 2013. Finishing touches are being added now. The collection and equipment are being placed in preparation for the April 26 opening.
The new Walker Library will offer roughly 15,000 square feet of usable space for staff and patrons. The previous library, which opened in 1981 and was renovated in 1995, offered approximately 10,900 square feet of usable space. See pictures of the building process on Flickr.
