‘Recipe Scrapbook’ Workshops Begin Dec. 4, Are a Collaboration of Hennepin County Library and Minnesota Historical Society
Adults can preserve treasured family recipes and mealtime memories by creating a page for a scrapbook or for framing at five free “Library Laboratory: Recipe Scrapbook” workshops presented in partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society beginning in December at Hennepin County libraries. Registration is required.

Instructors are staff from the Minnesota History Center. “All materials, except family photos and recipes, are provided. We are also providing images from the Minnesota Historical Society's extensive scrapbook and menu collection, which participants can include on their scrapbook pages,” said Jenna Theis, Museum Outreach Program Assistant at the Minnesota Historical Society.

Maren Levad, Museum Outreach Specialist, added, “Part of the charm of the historic cookbooks is the design of each book. Scrapbook participants will be able to enhance their page with the turn-of-the-century embellishments found in cookbooks of that time.”

Theis added, “Some of the images are border images that you find at the beginning of various sections in cookbooks — such as Fish, Breads, Cookies, etc. Other images are of grains, animals and typography used to decorate menus from the early 20th century, which were used at elegant dinner parties, celebrations or corporate dinner programs.”

“We will have supplies and templates for those who are starting a page, although participants are welcome to arrive with a page they’ve begun at home,” Levad said.

The scrapbook page provided is the standard scrapbook size — 12 X 12. It can be slipped into a scrapbook or framed in a scrapbook frame (sold at more craft stores), or reduced to 8 X 10 for a standard frame.

“Many of the traditions families hold near and dear stem from the time we spend around the dinner table,” Theis said. “Everyone remembers Aunt Clara’s award-winning meatloaf recipe and Grandma’s aprons for every occasion. The scrapbook page created by participants will help preserve those memories and may even be the start of a family cookbook that highlights both recipes and mealtime traditions. Join the Minnesota Historical Society in making frame-worthy scrapbook pages that will be treasured for generations to come!”

The Minnesota Historical Society and Minnesota’s regional library systems, with support from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, have partnered “to provide high quality, accessible programming for regional public libraries and their audiences with the intent to preserve and share Minnesota history,” Theis said.
