Hennepin County Library is very proud of its talented and diverse group of volunteers. With the guidance and support of Hennepin County Library staff, over 800 volunteers currently donate their time at all of the 26 libraries, extending the reach of the Library and getting the community involved in reaching library goals. If you are interested in becoming a Hennepin County Library volunteer follow these steps:

1. Check Out Current Opportunities
Volunteer openings are limited. Current and on-going openings are listed below and provide the criteria needed by volunteers: skills, dates, times and training. Most volunteer openings focus on helping with day-to-day library operation or working with children, teens, language-learners and seniors. Positions are also available for individuals with technology experience.

Adopt-A-Shelf at Edina
A volunteer is needed to arrange and check books, CD's and periodicals on shelves to make sure they are in order. The position offers a flexible timeframe for individuals who are detail oriented, love to keep up with materials in the collection and work independently.
Adopt-A-Shelf at Southdale
Volunteers are needed to arrange and check books, CD's and magazines on shelves to make sure they are in order. The position offers a flexible timeframe for adults and teens who are detail oriented, love to keep up with materials in the collection and can work independently.
Support Services at Rockford Road
Rockford Road Library needs a volunteer on Monday mornings to find and pull items that customers have reserved. Applicants should be detail-oriented, love books, and have ability to work independently after traininng.
Baby Storytime Assistant at Eden Prairie
Baby Storytime Assistant is needed at the Eden Prairie Library. Volunteer will greet parents and babies, assist parents with name tags, help with set-up and clean-up of books before, between and after sessions. Applicants need to be able to organize materials in a neat and orderly way, approach and talk to adults. Commitment is Wednesday and/or Thursday mornings,9:15-11:15, September-November and February-April.
Computer Volunteer at Rogers
Assist customers looking for basic computer help using a mouse, learning to type, signing up for e-mail accounts, navigating a website, using Word. Volunteers work on a one-to-one basis with customers at an assigned but flexible time in the library. Time commitment is 2 hours per week for 6 months.


Opportunities for Teens
Teen volunteers are needed to complete a variety of tasks, which may include: helping with programs, creating displays, working with books, working with technology, participating in a Teen Action Group (TAG)*, and more. Positions are available at multiple locations. Please check with your local library.

Teens Online Action Group

TAG! You're It
Take the lead in serving your community by becoming a Teen Action Group member. Volunteer at the library in a variety of ways depending on its needs, and gain valuable experience that helps beef up your school and job applications! We're currently recruiting new members for the Brookdale, Brooklyn Park, Maple Grove, Oxboro, and Ridgedale community library TAGs. Apply online or at those libraries.

On-going Volunteer opportunities
At-Home Delivery Volunteers
Deliver library materials to customers who are confined to their homes. Schedule visits on a regular basis to pick up and deliver materials. Positions are available at various suburban locations.

Computer Tutors
Assist customers looking for basic computer help using a mouse, learning to type, signing up for e-mail accounts, navigating a website, using Word. Volunteers work on a one-to-one basis with customers at an assigned time in the library. Locations available: Brooklyn Park, Champlin, Edina, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Rockford Road and Rogers. Training will be held locally.

Administrative Office assistants
Assist with projects at the Ridgedale Administrative Offices. Daytime hours only. Volunteers are called as needed to assist with mailings and general office work.
