Hennepin County Library is very proud of its talented and diverse group of volunteers. With the guidance and support of Hennepin County Library staff, over 800 volunteers currently donate their time at all of the 26 libraries, extending the reach of the Library and getting the community involved in reaching library goals. If you are interested in becoming a Hennepin County Library volunteer follow these steps:

1. Check Out Current Opportunities
Volunteer openings are limited. Current and on-going openings are listed below and provide the criteria needed by volunteers: skills, dates, times and training. Most volunteer openings focus on helping with day-to-day library operation or working with children, teens, language-learners and seniors. Positions are also available for individuals with technology experience.

2. Complete a Volunteer Application

Adopt-A-Shelf at Edina
A volunteer is needed to arrange and check books, CD's and periodicals on shelves to make sure they are in order. The position offers a flexible timeframe for individuals who are detail oriented, love to keep up with materials in the collection and work independently.
Support Services at Southdale
Volunteers needed to work with library materials Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons between 1-5. Skills needed include excellent keyboarding skills, attention to detail and physical ability to push full book trucks.

After School Program (ttyl@HCL)
Work with kids in grades K-5 after school at Augsburg Park Library in Richfield and Brookdale Library in Brooklyn Center. Volunteers will work one on one with children on literacy related activities - reading, Scrabble, Legos, computer games. Volunteers must have some experience with school age children and commit to working once a week or bi-weekly between 3-7 pm Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Training provided.

Opportunities for Teens
Teen volunteers are needed to complete a variety of tasks, which may include: helping with programs, creating displays, working with books, working with technology, participating in a Teen Action Group (TAG)*, and more. Positions are available at multiple locations. Please check with your local library.

On-going Volunteer opportunities
At-Home Delivery Volunteers
Deliver library materials to customers who are confined to their homes. Schedule visits on a regular basis to pick up and deliver materials. Positions are available at various suburban locations.

Computer Tutors
Assist customers looking for basic computer help using a mouse, learning to type, signing up for e-mail accounts, navigating a website, using Word. Volunteers work on a one-to-one basis with customers at an assigned time in the library. Locations available: Brooklyn Park, Champlin, Edina, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Rockford Road and Rogers. Training will be held locally.

Administrative Office assistants
Assist with projects at the Ridgedale Administrative Offices. Daytime hours only. Volunteers are called as needed to assist with mailings and general office work.

The seasonal publication of Events & Classes is delivered to your home.
All volunteers have access to free Omni Theater tickets at the Science Museum of Minnesota for the 6 PM show on the last Thursday of most months. (Details are always included in the Events & Classes)

Library Volunteers and Friends who have worked hours can receive free tickets to the Science Museum’s Omnitheater and admission to the Science Museum.
Now Showing: The Alps

Shows are at 6 p.m.; pick up tickets by 5:45 p.m.
