By Keyword

A keyword query searches all fields in the record. Enter one or more words or a phrase.

 Examples of keyword searches:

• Ventura
• Foshay Tower
• light rail transit
• Guthrie & Wright (Articles will feature both terms)
• Mixed Blood/Penumbra (Articles will feature either term)
• airline* & 1999

Note:  Capitalization does not affect the search. Foshay Tower, foshay tower, and FOSHAY TOWER all produce the same results. 

 By Title

 If you know the exact title of the photo you are searching for type it here.  For example:

• Bill King's Pavillion Viewed from the Lake
• Newsboys for the Minneapolis Journal in 1881
• Sailboats at the Dock at the Minnetonka Yacht Club

If you do not know the precise title of the photo you are looking for use the "keyword" field rather than the "title" field.

 By Accession Number

 If you know the accession number of the photo you are looking for you may search for it here.  Most accession numbers start with the letters "BR" or "M."  Examples include:

• BR0268
• M1676

If you do not know the accession number of the photo you are serching for then use the "keyword" field rather than the "accession number" field.

 By Contributor

An Contributor query searches by the name of the contributor or by the name of the person to whom the photographs are attributed.  Use the Lastname, Firstname format with or without a comma.

Examples of Contributor searches:

• Schimke, David
• Bares Craig

Note:  Capitalization does not affect the search.  Schimke David, schimke david, and SCHIMKE DAVID all produce the same results. 

 By Photographer

A photographer query is selected from the pull-down menu that lists all the indexed photographers (or agents) in Minneapolis Photo Collection. 

• A. Larson
• A.E. Kairies
• A.O. Reed, Brunswick, Maine
• AP Wirephoto
• Abbott, E.T.
• Acme
• ...etc

 By Year

A Year query enables you to find photos published within a particular year or range of years.

Example of Year formats:
