Richard Nicholas Pranke was born in 1911 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from Cretin High School in 1928. He attended the Saint Paul College of Law while working at the St. Paul Police Department, and graduated in 1934. That same year, he married Marie Elizabeth Tschida. He joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was assigned to offices in St. Paul, Washington, D.C., Boston, Los Angeles, and New Orleans. Pranke worked on many major kidnapping and bank robbery cases, including those involving Ma Barker, Babyface Nelson, Homer Van Meter (a Dillinger gangster), and John Henry Seadlund, the kidnapper/killer of Charles Ross in Chicago. He also worked on the famous Brink's robbery case in Boston in 1950, and the Adolph Coors III case in Colorado in 1960. After his retirement in 1961, he worked for the New York State Liquor Authority from 1961 to 1969. Pranke died in St. Paul on August 22, 1994.

Collection Description

One box. The Richard Pranke collection consists of the first copy of his manuscript autobiography, Autobiography, Travels, and Genealogy of Richard Nicholas Pranke, Retired FBI Agent, written from 1966 to 1969. The collection also contains a short biographical clipping and a photograph of Pranke and his wife, Marie Tschida Pranke.
