TAPS - LYRICS
When the music for "Taps" was written, there were no accompanying words. The United States Army does not have officially accepted lyrics but the following lyrics have been judged suitable to sing at military funerals:

Fading Light Dims the sight
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming Bright From afar
Drawing nigh, Falls the night.

Dear one, rest!
In the West Sable night lulls the day On her breast;
Sweet Goodnight! Now away to thy rest!

(From the Library Division for the United States Army Band and Chorus at Fort Myer)Two other common sets of usage:
Day is done Gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills From the sky.
All is well, Safely rest, God is nigh.

Or

Love, sweet dreams!
Lo, the beams of the light Fairy moon kissed the streams,
Love, Goodnight!
Ah so soon!
Peaceful dreams!
(adapted and harmonized by Josef Pasternack)
