|Creator:||Ward, Jean (Jean W.)|
|Title:||Neighborhood Newspapers Collection|
|Repository:||James K. Hosmer Special Collections Library|
Included in this collection is information on the role of a neighborhood newspaper in a community, what the newspaper readers hoped to gain from the paper and what role it has in has in residents lives. Drawing from an article that Dr. Ward wrote for the Twin Cities quarterly publication, Perspectives in 1977, "neighborhood newspapers contribute to the growing awareness of the neighborhood as a focal point for involvement, decision-making and the provision of services." This collection reflects a very strong community activism period in Minneapolis history. Many examples of local neighborhood newspapers with some narrative to the individual newspaper's history.
These materials were gathered for use (or written by) Dr. Ward in her professional life as an educator of journalism at the University of Minnesota and as a community activist leader in Minneapolis especially southwest Minneapolis.
