Leo Bernat (1924-1988) was a Housing and Redevelopment Authority Commissioner for Minneapolis, 1974-1977. Leo and his wife Emilia both served as president of the University District Improvement Association and were neighborhood activists.
Description of the Collection
Documents the process of the mayor nominating individuals for the Housing and Redevelopment Agency Commissioner and the process through City Hall. Includes semiannual/annual reports by Commissioner Bernat with his interpretation of actions by the Minneapolis Housing and Redevelopment Authority (MHRA). Includes information on the following topics/debates: site selection for a new domed stadium in Minneapolis in the Industry Square area or to remodel Memorial Stadium or the Metropolitan Stadium, 1974-1976; minutes, miscellaneous writings from the United Neighbors (affiliated with the United Neighbors of America); the University District Improvement Association (UDIA); and a report on the progress of the re-development of the Cedar Riverside area from the Cedar Riverside Associates, January, 1975. Also contains materials to/from Emilia Bernat (see especially folders for UDIA and biographical).
