Biography
Sarah "Sadie" Belle Pillsbury Gale was born in 1866 to John Sargent Pillsbury, founder of the C.A. Pillsbury and Company milling company and eighth Governor of Minnesota. She was his youngest daughter. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1888. In 1892, she married Edward C. Gale of Minneapolis, a Harvard-educated lawyer. They had one son, Richard Pillsbury Gale, who represented the 3rd District in the U.S. Congress and two grandsons, Richard Pillsbury Gale Jr. and Alfred Gale.
Early in their marriage the Gales traveled extensively, and later built the Gale Mansion at 2115 Stevens Avenue in 1912. Sarah insisted the kitchen be on the first floor of the house instead of the basement which was the custom at the time. Sarah was very particular about the landscape around the mansion. She had workers replace the grass when she decided it was too yellow-green and wanted a bluer strain. Before she had a stone wall added, she had a full sized model made up of wallboard installed to see what it would look like. Sarah enjoyed walking around her neighborhood even in winter when the sidewalk around the house would be melted by hot water before she would venture outside. Sarah was active in philanthropic and women's club work in the city for many years. Sarah Pillsbury Gale died on November 14, 1944.

One box. The Sarah "Sadie" Belle Pillsbury Gale Collection consists of a personal scrapbook, recounting her European travels from 1888-1889 with photographs, writings, and other personal mementos.
