Carl Warmington was born on September 5, 1907 in Dubuque, Iowa. He lived in Minneapolis from 1909 to 1936 at 3105 Clinton Avenue with his parents. He married Ruth Carter in 1936 and the couple lived in St. Paul until 1938 when Carl accepted the Executive Secretaryship of the Kansas City, Kansas Community Chest and Council. The Warmingtons did not return to live in Minnesota until 1978 when they briefly lived near Lake Harriet before they moved to Florida in 1980 for the rest of their retirement. Carl Warmington died on December 17, 2006 in Bradenton, Florida.
Warmington was a musician, social worker, and Minneapolis resident. Collection includes biographical reminiscences, especially about the Depression and Mr. Warmington's days as a member of a Jazz band during the 1920s. Also includes photos from his days as director of the Homeless Men's Bureau (early 1930s) and manuscripts. Looking Back, a Personal History (2 c.) and Reminiscences, a 1929 Round the World Cruise on the S. S. President Wilson Steamship, "Homeless men in Minneapolis during the depression": an oral history project 10/10/1989. "Jazz Memories" from the periodical Active Lifestyles, February 1991 (pgs 38-39), and the articles "Remembering the Great Depression," "Enjoying Tennis during Retirement Years," "Alcoholism and the Homeless Man" from The Transient, and "Memories of the Jazz Age" from Mississippi Rag. Letters and some family photos included.
Description of the Collection
Two boxes. Collection consists of biographical reminiscences, letters, family photos, and photos taken in 1930's of Anchor hotel, Men's Bureau, Union City Mission, and Gateway District.
Box 1 contains three spiral bound manuscripts.
