About the art

Teri Kwant’s artistic vision lives inside, outside and above this fireplace. One of four fireplace art commissions for the Central Library, Kwant’s work asks the viewer to consider censorship. Inside the fireplace, words etched onto rocks suggest the dampening effect censorship has on creativity. Meanwhile, a bench made of steel and plywood surrounding the fireplace calls to mind a closed book. And big matches hang above the fireplace, ready to ignite—asking us to consider how we smother or inflame the spark of creativity.
