  • Wait times for holds placed online are longer than usual. 
  • Please do not return items at this time.
  • Due dates will be automatically extended.

Curbside pickup step-by-step

  1. Place items on hold.
    • Use our website to search for items currently available at a curbside location.
    • Place items on hold, and choose a curbside location for pickup.
  2. Wait for notification, then call us when you plan to pick up.
    • You will receive email or phone notification when your hold is available for pickup. Wait times for holds placed online are currently longer than usual.
    • After you receive notification, call your curbside pickup library and have your library card barcode available. For faster service onsite, call ahead with an estimated time of arrival so staff can have your items ready.
    • Staff will check out your items, put them in a plastic bag, and place the bag on a cart outside of the building.
  3. After calling, pick up your items at the curbside location.
    • Bags will be on a cart outside the building.
    • Find your bag labeled with your hold pickup number (this is written on your library card).
    • Grab your bag and enjoy!

To support social distancing efforts, libraries offering curbside pickup are operating with very limited staff. Wait times for holds placed online are currently longer than usual. Thanks for your patience.

To place a hold for pickup at a curbside pickup location, you need to disable single-click holds first in My Account.

Book returns remain closed and no items are due at this time. Due dates will be auto-extended to at least three weeks after reopening. Please do not attempt to return items using the exterior cart at curbside pickup locations.

We can transfer holds between curbside locations, but we are currently unable to transfer holds from a non-curbside location to a curbside location. (Example: Your hold can be transferred between East Lake and Ridgedale but cannot be transferred between Hosmer and Ridgedale.)

If the materials you’d like to check out are available at a curbside pickup location, please Ask Us, or cancel your existing hold, then place another hold in the reservation system and select your preferred curbside pickup location.

Yes, patrons must hold a library card registered with Hennepin County Library to use curbside pickup. If you do not have a regular library card, locations with curbside pickup can create one for you. Call the library and our staff will place your new library card in the bag with your materials.

Please note that temporary e-cards can only be used for online services.

If a patron experiences mobility issues, we can provide an accommodation such as placing bagged items on the hood or in the trunk of your vehicle. Please request this when you call.

All physical materials currently on the shelf at a curbside pickup location are available, including books, DVDs, etc.

Library staff can override fine restrictions and checkout limits during the pandemic response. If you would like to pay your fines, our online payment system is still available.

Hennepin County Library will evaluate patron response to the initial eight locations and potentially add libraries to meet demand.

The locations were chosen based on several criteria, including: 

  • Regional distribution
  • Number of existing holds
  • Building layout accommodates safe social distancing of staff
  • Building exterior features parking lots, overhangs for outdoor shelving, etc.  
  • Size of physical collection

The contactless curbside pickup model we are using provides maximum social distancing for the safety of our patrons and our staff. Staff will use gloves and cloth face coverings in accordance with Hennepin County workplace safety policy and CDC guidelines.

All physical materials have been quarantined, and no materials can be returned at this time.

Patrons and staff should not approach one another and respect the need for social distancing. This may feel uncomfortable but is necessary to provide a safe, contactless pickup service. If you notice patrons at the pickup cart, please remain in your vehicle until the previous patron has departed.

Plastic bags are a temporary measure to protect patron privacy, protect physical materials, and limit unnecessary contact. Bags help separate materials to avoid the need for patrons to sort through items on the pickup cart.
