This is a departure from Barr’s usual national park service mysteries. It’s a sensitive love story about two women in an affectionate relationship who carve out a life for themselves in Nevada. It’s a slice of life novel based on actual diaries. It’s a very tastefully written, highly intriguing and moves along quickly. (I pretty much read it in one sitting.) This is one of Barr’s best works, if not her best!

Very good. In the 1800’s, a schoolteacher and a former student flee west from those persecuting their lesbian relationship. Not only a lesbian theme, this is an exploration of the limited power women held in those days -- for instance without a man, they could not engage in business contracts and they had to get their hired hand to sign the lease of their stagecoach way station. The book is not at all what I expected, but I liked it very much.
