This is a great new addition to the “Old Man’s War” universe. In this installment the chapters may be read as individual stories but as a group they definitely form a coherent story with characters that we find across several of the chapters. The underlying thread of the novel is the conflict between the Conclave (an alliance of about 400 extra-terrestrial races), the Colonial Union (humans away from earth) and earthlings. The Conclave and the Colonial Union both trying to get earth to join their group and a fourth mysterious group is trying to create havoc among everybody in order to, presumably, start a war. Lieutenant Harry Wilson is the character we read about most. He is a member of the Colonial Defense Forces and is a kind of troubleshooter. He comes up with innovative solutions to unusual problems such as how to detect the remnants of a starship that has been vaporized by interstellar missiles, such as how to get a dog out of a carnivorous plant and such as how to survive when falling down onto earth from above the atmosphere. A great read that definitely leaves the door open to future additions to the “Old Man’s War” universe.
