About the art
Meant to evoke the Ojibwa canoe, this bike rack greets library patrons as a symbol of passage and exploration as they approach the library entrance – whether by bike, car, transit, or on foot. The artist has said that “public sculpture should work; it has a job to do,” and this sculpture surely does, with capacity for 15-24 bikes and a design guided by the input of bike enthusiasts. Weathering steel forms a protective oxidizes surface on its bow and stern; bikes bisect the hull and are supported by stainless steel pipes. Complementing the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) theme of the library, this vessel serves as a tool to connect people to information.
