Adult volunteers

Computer tutor volunteer

Assist patrons with computer basics – typing, using a mouse, signing up for email accounts, navigating a website, using Microsoft Office, printing, filling out applications, and other tasks as requested. Volunteers work one-to-one with patrons at an assigned time in the library. Experience with computers required. This position is an excellent opportunity to advance digital literacy.

Locations:

K-12 homework help volunteer 

Work with K-12 youth after school on homework-related projects. Volunteers support students' academic success by helping them develop literacy and mathematics skills, understand homework assignments, and prepare for college. Volunteers work once a week for at least one semester. Experience with youth is helpful. Training is provided. A criminal background check is required.

Minneapolis Central Library Craft Club

Craft Club is a place where people of all crafting abilities can come together to practice their skills, learn new ones, teach each other, share their experiences, and make connections through the common love of crafting. The club is held on Sundays from noon-2pm. 

Volunteers will enjoy this experience if they:

  • are comfortable working in a busy, activity-filled space
  • are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with others
  • have skills in at least one of the following areas of crafting: knitting, crocheting, embroidery, paper crafts, sewing

Library staff and volunteers teach skills one-on-one or in small groups; volunteers are not expected to lead a class.

Web usability sessions

Volunteers needed to participate in usability sessions to help improve the library website. Learn more about web usability sessions.

Due to COVID-19, Hennepin County Library is not currently accepting applications for Court-ordered community service.

Local Friends groups are volunteer, membership-based organizations at individual libraries. Varied in size and activities, all share a common goal of supporting and advocating for their local libraries.

Teen volunteers

We have volunteer opportunities for youth ages 12-18. Positions vary depending on the library.

How to apply
  1. Check with your local Hennepin County library about volunteer opportunities for teens.
  2. If there are volunteer openings, complete the teen volunteer application (PDF) and bring it to the library.
  3. A library staff member will contact you.
