The Spirit of ’76

About the art

There are echoes of a much older work in this sculpture by Tom Montemurro. In 1876, Civil War vet Archibald Willard created the original “The Spirit of ’76,” a painting of three men playing drums and flute amid the wreckage of the American Revolutionary War, as a flag flew high behind them. Montemurro’s version adapts that patriotic ethos into a smaller scale, with three figures marching forward, one playing the drum, another playing the flute, and the leader holding the flag high.
