About the art

This colorful coat rack is at once a work of art, a functional furniture piece and a learning opportunity. A mosaic made of ceramic tile, it asks visitors, “Do you know them?” and then highlights letters of the alphabet with associated images to spark children’s imaginations. A colorful border adds another playful layer, with letter tiles spelling out the names of characters from children’s literature.

Artist statement

“This coat rack is an extension of my interest in early American art, especially young girls’ embroidery samples from the mid-to-late 1800s, which show off technique in the form of alphabets, simple imagery and verse.”
