About the art

One of four fireplace-art commissions in the library, Jackie Chang’s work takes inspiration from the Dakota word “Mnisota,” or “sky-tinted waters.” To create this blue-sky scene, she chose to work with architectural float glass and colored metal oxides, which got melted on at Franz Mayer Studio in Munich. The words “WANT NOT” stand tall at the bottom of the expansive sky, offering visitors the opportunity to discover their own interpretation. Each panel features a mix of semi-opaque and transparent areas, offering moments of immersion and moments of clarity.
