About the art

This mural by architect Sara Rothholz Weiner invites viewers to travel back in time to 1915, the year the Sumner Library first opened its doors to the neighborhood. The panoramic image shows the Minneapolis skyline as it appeared then, helping to anchor the library in a certain place and time. Layered above the skyline are quotes celebrating books and libraries from the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Malcolm X, Anne Frank, Jorge Luis Borges, Maya Angelou, Hirsi Magan and Mai Neng Moua—honoring a diversity of thinkers past and present.
