Commissioned Public Art Policy

Attendees discussed the Commissioned Public Art Policy and the recommendation to rescind it. Library staff shared the history of the policy, the current process of commissioning art that lacks Library Board oversight, and that rescinding this policy wouldn’t impact the inclusion of public art in library spaces. The committee agreed to replace this policy with an administrative policy that better reflects current practices and to incorporate art selection committee appointments in the Library Board Bylaws. To ensure there isn’t a gap in policy coverage, the committee recommends the Board delays rescinding this policy until the updated Bylaws are approved in November.

A motion was made to explain the request to rescind the Commissioned Public Art Policy to the September 16 Board meeting and bring forward the official motion to rescind at the November 18 meeting.
