Nestled between large pine and oak trees, Penn Lake Library opened in 1970. It was the first free-standing library built in the City of Bloomington. The library was renovated in 2003. In the decades before 1970, the library operated out of various locations in the community including Bloomington Schools Administration Building (1954-57) and Lincoln High School (1957-62).

An exhibit of art by the children of immigrants about the anxieties felt in an era of increasing immigration enforcement and immigrant detention is at Oxboro and Penn Lake libraries through July 27 and will be at Augsburg Park Library in the fall.
An exhibit inspiring empathy through stories of crime, privilege, punishment and second chances will be at Minneapolis Central Library, August 1-September 30.
