There are two ways for Hennepin County residents and property owners to obtain a library card.
In Person
Get a library card with full borrowing privileges, including online resources and physical materials, by visiting any Hennepin County library.
Online
E-cards offer access to eBooks, audiobooks, and other online resources only. Apply for an e-card and receive your barcode immediately. Visit a library to upgrade your e-card to a physical library card with full borrowing privileges.
If you live in Minnesota outside of Hennepin County, you can register your local library card with Hennepin County Library.
To register your local library card, Ask Us or go to a Hennepin County library.
Exceptions: Minnesota residents whose public library is not a member of one of the regional public library systems (Clarkfield, Crosby, East Grand Forks, Hendricks and Taylors Falls) are not eligible to register their library card.
Individuals who are not Minnesota residents or Minnesota residents whose public library is not a member of one of the regional public library systems (Clarkfield, Crosby, East Grand Forks, Hendricks and Taylors Falls) may obtain a Hennepin County Library card for an annual fee ($60).
Fee-based cards allow patrons to borrow physical materials but do not allow the checkout of downloadable content or remote access to subscription online resources.
Fee-based cards expire 12 months after the issue date.
Applications must be completed in person at a Hennepin County library.
Report a lost library card
Report a lost or stolen library card immediately to avoid responsibility for unauthorized use. Ask Us to get help from library staff by chat, phone or email.
